DAY 2- Cycle

Is this what family is suppose to be like?
Never did I say,
I wanted to be like them alright
I just want us to not fight,
want us to be comfortable, aight

You know, be happy with each other
laughing and crying together
Talking and communicating,
listening and sharing
comforting and supporting
yeah,
all that and whatever

but all we ever do,
is fighting and bickering
pulling our own skins,
like we not blood and related
verbally, physically tormenting each other
like we want to be separated
but don’t actually want to separate

can’t come home cause home doesn’t feel like home
where, I’m suppose to feel the most comfortable,
makes my blood boil

too loud, can’t concentrate
someone out here fighting about something again
No one telling anyone, what’s right from wrong
“It’s just culture, we’re family, everything alright”
no justice in the household
when you under a black family roof
you want peace, find it somewhere else

cause here, it’s an issue, planted in the roots
this is tradition,
passed down from heritage,
deep in our DNA
Father hits his son,
and son grows older and hits his son
the cycle continues to recycle and repeat

21st century and some habits
don’t die too quickly
a fist turned to verbal
and some words made into physical

Children are the future,
when they grow up in a toxic environment
stemmed from the past,
their present, will be corrupted
and a seed that is corrupted will manifest
and corrupt the next generation
family abuse, is real
It hurts everybody!
